Stevens was a psychologist on the floating compound that Michael Altman, as well as many other scientists, were kept on during the initial retrieval and study of the Black Marker in 2214. He was responsible for setting in motion the formation of the Church of Unitology alongside Craig Markoff.[1]

Biography[]

As a psychologist, Stevens was one of Markoff's right hand men. He tested people before they went down on a dive to either check on the Black Marker's progress, take different tests, or check the bathyscaphe's performance. While everyone he tested was seen as stable, after they went down they quickly went insane under the influence of the Black Marker.

Stevens helped Craig Markoff every step of the way when they were excavating the Marker from the Chicxulub Crater in the Yucatán peninsula. He, along with Markoff, captured Michael Altman after Altman destroyed the lab and sank the Black Marker with it. Revealing himself as a full-blown believer in the Black Marker's supposedly benevolent intentions for humanity, Stevens declared that, as believing in the Marker's plan was a matter of the "salvation" of the entire human race, he needed a way to get the public to share this faith, conspiring with Markoff to kill Altman and thus turn him into a martyr. Before killing him, Markoff assured Altman that the Marker being sunk was merely a temporary setback and that it would inevitably be brought up again while Stevens used Altman's death to publicly found a new religion: Unitology.[1]

Trivia[]

  • While Stevens appeared to have no interest in the Marker or Unitology at first, he eventually became a full-blown believer and convinced Markoff to release Altman from Krax's torture so he could speak to the religious members and help ease tensions among them, as he feared they were planning a riot.
  • A note transcribing an interview with Stevens about Unitology and Altman's death can be found in Dead Space (2023).
