Chapter 2 is the second and final chapter in the Dead Space 2: Severed DLC, taking place entirely within the Titan Memorial Medical Center.

Description

Gabe Weller and Victor Bartlett raced to reach Lexine before the other, unaware that another party is also looking for her.

Summary

Almost immediately after Gabe’s arrival at the hospital, he is attacked by an Enhanced Brute and Crawlers. He managed to dispatch both and went inside. He traversed through a severely damaged part of the hospital. The hull of the station was ruptured in a type of accident, robbing the environment of air. He encountered a pair of Detonator Mines blocking his path in conjunction with a sudden attack from a Slasher. Once he is in the heart of the hospital, Lexine contacted him again and described a pair of men dressed in white which are “hunting for something”. Gabe warned her to stay out of sight. Lexine obliged and urged that he should hurry.

When he reached an elevator, Gabe is contacted by Bartlett who noted his apparent mistake with communicating with Lexine’s RIG over a non-secure channel. Gabe sarcastically thanked the colonel for the obvious heads up and continued to proceed through the hospital. The Corruption that he encountered overgrew, smothering the environment of a medical room. A group of Necromorphs laid dead on various tables and space when he entered. His presence caused them to drop their farce and attack him in a blind rush.

He dispatched the enemies quickly and reached the Stasis Recovery Room. Lexine contacted him a second time, unaware that their communications are being monitored and told her husband that she thought that the men in white are looking for her. Though Gabe warned her that they are being tracked by Victor, he asked if the men that she is talking about are soldiers. Lexine reconfirmed that the men in white are searching for her. Something about them is “different”. Bartlett interjected into the conversation, promising Lexine that he will arrive shortly at her location. Gabe threatened to kill Bartlett and told Lexine that he is on his way as well.

As the Stasis Recovery Room’s door opened, the silhouette of Bartlett is barely caught vanishing around a corner as a Pack member attacked him. The members of the child-like Necromorph survived and attacked Gabe as he entered the reception hall. He dispatched them and nearly caught up to Bartlett until he is blockaded by a wheelchair thrown directly into his black and another set of Detonator Mines set up throughout the room. Gabe remained one step behind Bartlett, forced to take longer routes to get around obstacles created by the environment or Bartlett himself. Bartlett fired stray shots down the hall just a few feet from where Gabe is before dashing off. Gabe gave chase.

Gabe encountered a man who was cut in half in an operating room. He did not appear to be aware of his death until his upper body fell away from the glass panel that he was pressed against and his RIG flatlined. Gabe is ambushed by a pair of Slashers. He dispatched them and moved on to the next elevator. In a panic, Bartlett tried to dissuade Gabe by revealing the nature behind Tiedemann’s termination order. Lexine was a subject of a project dubbed The Oracle Program and a lab rat for the Earth Government. Gabe was only necessary to get her pregnant. Deeming them security risks, Bartlett still planned to go ahead with Tiedemann’s orders. After traveling through the bathrooms, Gabe witnessed Bartlett’s attack on the Necromorphs blocking his path just below the observation room that he will soon enter.

When he entered the room, he came across the corpse of the Necromorph that Bartlett killed and the body of a man whose flesh is missing from his legs and arms [note 1]. He used the discarded body of the Necromorph to set off the next round of Detonator Mines set up by Bartlett and proceeded directly into the Psych Ward. Gabe arrived too late. Bartlett already apprehended Lexine. Lexine called out for him and Gabe demanded that Bartlett should release his wife.

Bartlett dismissed him, preoccupied with the two men in white. He addressed them with familiarity and demanded that they should follow Tiedemann’s orders. The men inquired whose orders and “key subjects” that Bartlett is referring to before one of them attacked the colonel with a ring-type device on his finger. Bartlett is subdued without incident. They captured Lexine who cried out for Gabe a second time. Their attention is drawn to the security officer. They deemed his “purpose” fulfilled and declared that the “servants” will take care of him before they departed with Lexine. Gabe fought his way back down to the lower levels of the hospital through wave after wave of Necromorphs to reach Lexine in time. He arrived at the hospital’s shuttle bay in time to witness the deaths of the two men at the hands of the Infectors as Lexine rushed into a gunship and out of danger. He defeated the Infectors and the Twitchers and prepared to override the hospital’s lockdown on the bulkhead doors.

In the process, however, he is interrupted by Bartlett who armed a grenade without a second thought to his own livelihood in order to kill Gabe. They struggled with the explosive until Gabe is able to knock him down. As he prepared to punch Bartlett again, the grenade detonated. Gabe came to moments later and discovered that his right leg was blown off and his helmet was damaged. Bleeding out, Gabe told Lexine that he loved her and prepared to fire on the bulkhead seals. In the midst of battle with the Necromorphs, he is successful in his attempts to override the hospital lockdown on the doors. He is nearly sucked out into the vacuum of space alongside the Necromorphs, but managed to grab hold of something in the floor. As Lexine’s shuttle launched, he farewelled her for the last time before losing consciousness. Lexine called out for Gabe, but to no avail through the RIG before she began to cry.

Afterward, it is revealed that the Earth Government listed Lexine as "Missing". She evaded capture and is to be terminated on sight. Gabe is listed as "Deceased". His remains are collected for study and his records are deleted.

Trivia

  • The Detonator Mines encountered at the beginning of the chapter suggested that Bartlett had a significant lead on Gabe by the time he arrived at the hospital.
  • The corpse of the Tripod encountered by Isaac Clarke laid dead to the right of Gabe's Gunship.
  • Isaac and Nolan Stross's cameos in Severed is a wanted poster marking them as extremely dangerous threats[1]
  • Despite the Earth Government listing him among the deceased, producer Steve Papoutsis alluded to Gabe's survival during a Q&A session on forumspring.com[note 2]. However, a later Q&A session revealed that Popoutsis had no plans to use Gabe in the future Dead Space games post-Severed[note 3].
  • The Peng Treasure can be found in the Bathroom near the first maintenance access point[2].

Notes

  1. The state of his body seems to suggest that the corpse was attacked by a Puker, which is unusual behavior for a Necromorph, given that they normally totally ignore bodies that are already dead but have not been infected yet
  2. Anon: Hi steve A question about Dead Space 2: Severed, what made you decide to Kill off Gabe Weller?
leveluptime: Who said he's dead? :) forumspring
  3. Papoutsis: Regarding Weller, as much as I like him I don't think we are going to see him again, at least not post the severed timeline post #5
