Samuel Irons was an engineering specialist and Unitologist who worked aboard the USG Ishimura. He was a very large man with shaman-like characteristics. He first appeared when a protesting crowd of workers demanded to see the Marker. He manages to calm down the crowd by telling them that if they interfere, the scientists of the Church will be unable to decipher the meaning of the inscriptions and thus ruin a chance of enlightenment.

Irons later appears during an attack on Alissa Vincent and her crew. He manages to save them using a mining tool that seems to be a chainsaw made from plasma, having discovered that the Necromorphs die faster if they are dismembered. He eventually had joined their crew and helped make it to the bridge where they discovered that the gravitational controls had been overridden and the ship was on course to crash into Aegis 7. Along the way to the control room the crew discovered a group of survivors being attacked by Necromorphs. Vincent offered to distract the Necromorphs while Irons and Ramirez would have helped the survivors escape. Irons, however, forced Vincent to relinquish her role and he instead distracted the Necromorphs. He fought valiantly but ultimately was stabbed in the chest and surrounded by Necromorphs. Consumed by the madness the Marker implemented in his head, Irons gave up hope and allowed himself to be killed while muttering a verse from the book of Unitology. After he was slowly torn apart by the Necromorphs, he was transformed into one by an Infector right before Vincent's and Ramirez's eyes.

Trivia

• Irons would have become a part of the Graverobber, a variant of Necromorph exclusive to the film; but the creature was ultimately cut.
• Irons carries a miniature marker as his necklace.
