Beginnings is the prologue of Dead Space 3.
June 18th, 2314. Private Tim Caufman (accompanied in co-op mode by fellow soldier Sam Ackerman) struggles through a frigid ice storm on the planet Tau Volantis when he stops to assess his situation, inexplicably opening his helmet in a blizzard, and contacts Dr. Earl Serrano. Though he is unsure of what he's been sent to find, Serrano is positive that the device is key to their survival. Eventually, the storm clears and Tim locates a crashed starship, the Mule, on the edge of a cliff. Breaking the quarantine seal on the door, Tim is horrified by the sight of a bloodied soldier stumbling out of the ship. The man falls over dead, a fire axe embedded in his back. The perpetrator, a relatively un-mutated Necromorph, retrieves its weapon and proceeds to attack Tim, followed by another of its strain.
Caufman kills the creatures with minor difficulty, and he is urged by Dr. Serrano to look for a canister that's half a meter long and ventures inside. More Necromorphs attack Tim; after he kills them he heads up a ladder into the cockpit. There, he locates an item simply labelled the "Codex", and attempts to contact Serrano with news of his success when the Mule lurches and begins to slide over the cliff.
Tim claws his way to safety, being thrown out the side door with mere seconds to save himself from a fall. Attaching the codex to his suit, he uses a tow cable to rappel down the side of the cliff, while Dr. Serrano urges the Private to meet him at the silo and not to stop for anyone. Halfway down the mountain, Tim is forced to make a run for it before the ship's debris can crush him.
An avalanche caused by the ship throws him off his feet, and he slides the rest of the way down the mountain on his back. The ship debris catches up with him and sends Tim flying through the air, until he crashes to the ground (in co-op mode, Sam Ackerman is killed here by the crashing debris). Caufman finds himself in an encampment where soldiers lay on the ground dead or hanged from electrical structures. General Spencer Mahad suddenly appears, seemingly out of nowhere, startling the young soldier.
When Tim inquires about the whereabouts of Dr. Serrano, Mahad doesn't answer him; instead he chooses to ruminate about the doctor's optimism. Tim, remembering the Codex, explains to the general that Serrano believes they can be saved if he can get the Codex to the city. Mahad thinks they've lost control of the situation, and takes the Codex from Tim. He asks Tim if he loves the Earth and his family; when Tim answers in the affirmative, Mahad suddenly kills him with a shot to the face. He activates the Codex and deletes its information. Mahad takes a moment to salute the S.C.A.F. flag before he commits suicide. As his body crumples to the snow, the Codex display lights up with "Data Purged".
In order of appearance:
- Players earn the 'Stranger in a Strange Land' achievement/trophy by completing the Prologue.
Fodders makes their first appearance in this chapter and it is the first Necromorphs to appear in Dead Space 3.
Despite the introduction scene showing Caufman (and Ackerman if playing co-op) with his helmet down in the middle of a snowstorm, his body temperature does not decrease, nor a meter appear behind his back.
- The Codex is first introduced in this chapter.
- According to Earl Serrano, it is half a meter long.
- The ship that contains the Codex may not be a ship at all, but a cargo plane. As Tim Caufman is sliding on his back down the mountain away from the debris, he must shoot out what closely resembles a jet turbine engine. Tim is also almost crushed by the main landing gear, which is identical to the main landing gear on many modern jet aircraft.
