"I have the Marker, and this entire system can go to hell. For what it's worth, you did a great job, Isaac. See you around... Or maybe not."
—Kendra to Isaac[1]

Kendra Daniels was the computer specialist aboard the USG Kellion emergency maintenance team and secretly an agent working for an unknown party, presumably the EarthGov. She was the primary human antagonist of Dead Space.

BiographyEdit

Spoilers

No information of Kendra's life prior to her service on the Kellion is given upon Zach Hammond's request[2]. She was inserted into the team upon persistent recommendations by a higher-up in the CEC. She may have been working for the Earth Defense Force and worked as an cover agent for secret missions, such as the mission to Aegis VII.

Incident on the USG IshimuraEdit

Shortly after the crash landing of the USG Kellion, the crew made their way into the Ishimura's Flight Lounge. There, the crew was attacked by multiple Necromorphs who immediately dispatched the two lower ranked security personnel, Cpl. Chen and Cpl. Johnston. The crew then scatters; Kendra runs with Hammond, while Isaac Clarke makes his own route to relative safety. She and Hammond then contact Isaac from the bridge as he moves through the ship; guiding Isaac through various locations until she and Hammond are attacked by a Leaper.

The Necromorph drives them from the bridge, separating Kendra from Hammond. After finding refuge in the USG Ishimura's computer core, Kendra keeps in contact with Isaac Clarke and Zach Hammond through their RIG links, while using her computer skills to assist them with their tasks around the ship; like by overriding secured doors throughout the ship as well as uncovering the mystery behind the vessel's infestation.

She frequently expresses distrust towards Hammond, suspecting he knows more about the Marker than he leads on. She behaves much more frantically than both Hammond and Isaac, often urging them to abort the mission and focus on the escape. Later on, the Marker's influence begins to take its toll on Kendra, causing her to hallucinate. These hallucinations include her seeing her brother and at one point Kendra mentions seeing her brother waving at her from a security monitor, even though she says "it's not possible". Although she later accuses Isaac of becoming insane, she appears to have forgotten her own hallucinations, and may be unaware of her own damaged sanity or because she realized her hallucinations were not real while Issac believed his were real.

Return to Aegis VIIEdit

Securing the MarkerEdit

Towards the end of the game, Kendra is supposed to leave her position in the computer core of the USG Ishimura to meet up with Isaac and Dr. Terrence Kyne at the escape shuttle; however, she had already made her way there and had concealed herself inside. As Isaac prepares to board the ship, Kendra shoots Dr. Kyne in the chest with a Divet pistol, in order to secure the shuttle for herself. Dr. Kyne dies almost instantly as the shuttle takes off and exits the Ishimura, effectively stranding Isaac. While on the shuttle, Kendra (through her RIG link) reveals herself to be a covert agent, who was specially selected by 'higher ups' to be on board the USG Kellion mission to recover the Marker 3A.

She also reveals the true origin of the Marker, and its purpose. Kendra bids Isaac farewell, but Nicole Brennan (in reality the Marker) shows Isaac how to recall the stolen shuttle. Kendra's ship is then recalled back into the USG Ishimura landing bay, but before the shuttle is taken back, Kendra boards an emergency escape pod, and crash-lands somewhere near the Necromorph-infested colony on Aegis VII.

As Kendra waited for the engineer to arrive on the planet for a perfect opportunity to reclaim the Marker, Isaac, with the guidance of Nicole, takes the Marker back to the colony and places it on its pedestal where it activated the first time prior the outbreak. The Marker activated an electromagnetic pulse that destroyed the gravity tethers holding a massive piece of the planet in the orbit, which resulted in the chunk being pulled down into the planet.

Kendra waits for Isaac to enter a decontamination room and then appears, revealing to Isaac a vid-log made by Nicole that she killed herself before the Kellion arrived and stating that Isaac was "just as insane as Dr. Kyne and Captain Matthius. She also stated that she was starting to like Isaac. After Kendra said her farewells to Isaac, she made her way back to the landing pad where Isaac had left with the Marker on her hands.

DeathEdit

As Kendra was preparing to load the Marker into the ship and make her escape, she was apprehended by Isaac who made his way around the facility through another route. Before Isaac could reach her, the The Hive Mind rises up from the mining crater and smacks her away from the ship with a tendril, which greatly damages her, bringing her health down to medium level with blood splattering everywhere.

As Kendra tries to get up after getting knocked down, she screams as one of the massive tentacles smashes down onto her, knocking her unconscious. It then rolls her across the pad and then throws her at the sharp corner of a wall, the force of the impact destroying her head and sending two limbs flying. Her body then crashes down sending her other limbs flying, completely dismembering her. Kendra's cardiac monitor then immediately flatlines, signaling her death.

The Hive Mind completely emerges from the crater in an attempt to finish off Isaac, but under-estimated the engineer's capabilities and in the end, is killed by him. Isaac makes his way to the shuttle with the Marker waiting to be loaded into the ship, moments before the chunk of the planet collapses onto the planet, destroying everything.

LegacyEdit

At the end, Kendra's mission failed as the Marker was destroyed in the impact, foiling her employer's plans for the artifact. However, only couple years later, the Earth Government started building more and more Markers with the help of Isaac and others like him.
Spoilers end here.

TriviaEdit

  • Tonantzin Carmelo provides the voice and likeness of Kendra.
  • Kendra wears a brown sleeveless shirt with a RIG attached to it under her jacket. It can be seen briefly during her confrontation with Isaac at the Marker's pedestal.
  • Kendra has a weapon holster on her right leg, where she stores her standard-issue high-powered Divet pistol.
  • Kendra mentions seeing her brother at one point, indicating that she has a sibling. However, she claims that the experience was "impossible", because he wasn't anywhere near the Ishimura at the time.
  • Because the Marker only displays hallucinations of dead people, it can be safely assumed that her brother had died prior to the events of the game.
  • It's unknown how Kendra was able to successfully navigate the Ishimura and Aegis VII colony when they were overrun by Necromorphs. Unlike Isaac and Hammond she had no armor or effective weaponry (only a Divet). Most likely she used the device she is seen using to find out information on the Ishimura to help her around safely.
  • It is implied Kendra was the one blocking Hammond's RIG signal during the events of Dead Space, rendering communication impossible, although this is never proven.
  • Kendra's body parts seem to disappear after The Hive Mind fully emerges. However if the player looks under the tentacle covering where she fell the player can see her foot and an arm, which cannot be retrieved with Kinesis.
  • There are more than a few similarities between Kendra Daniels and Daina Le Guin of Dead Space 2. Both Kendra and Daina initially start off as allies to Isaac, only to betray him at a pivotal moment. Both work for established organizations that have plans concerning the Marker, albeit different plans and organizations. Both are skilled computer technicians, as demonstrated by Kendra's role on the USG Kellion repair team, and Daina's tracking and various technical assistance provided during Clarke's journey to the top of the Church.
  • Kendra Daniels was named one of the 'Hottest Video Game Babes of 2008' by Maxim Magazine.
  • Kendra may have had feelings for Isaac. As she removes the Aegis VII Marker from its pedestal, she says "[...]It's a shame, I was starting to like you". Although this could mean that, like Daina, she thought that Isaac was useful as a pawn, doing tasks given by her and Hammond.
  • At the beginning of the game, Kendra wears a jacket made from some sort of artificial rubber. However, she ditched the suit before entering the computer core of the Ishimura. Judging by cuts and bruices on her body, she was most likely attacked by Necromorphs and had her jacket torn off.

NotesEdit

  1. Given Specialist Daniels' intricate knowledge of the Red Marker and the references she makes to 'her department', it is believed that she was an agent of an unknown organization. Many theorize that this organization was the E.D.F. or an element within the E.D.F.; however, with no confirmation available, any theory is speculative.
