John Welland is a clinical psychiatrist on the Aegis VII Colony. Along with fellow physician Tom Sciarello, Dr. Welland futilely attempts to treat the colony residents' numerous psychological problems caused by the Red Marker. When his own prognostic analysis proves fruitless, Dr. Welland transfers a few of the affected colonists to the USG Ishimura for study at the request of Dr. Terrence Kyne. Most notable of the transfers is the prisoner Harris, whose detailed psychiatric report can be found here.

During the pandemonium following Planet Crack, Welland and Sciarello head to the colony MedLab to prepare it to receive wounded. The two doctors engage in a heated discussion over medical ethics, particularly their roles as physicians in the crisis, before stumbling across dormant Necromorphs in the morgue. Welland is presumably killed shortly thereafter.
