During the events of the Dead Space series, characters suffer many hallucinations. They are the result of direct manipulations of the brain-nerves by the signal that is emanated by the Markers and the Brethren Moons. These hallucinations are used to influence living beings into assisting the Markers with their ultimate goal of achieving Convergence, whether this be by instilling paranoia, causing suicidal/homicidal actions, or by guiding individuals who can better "understand" the signal to create Red Markers.

Dead Space: Extraction[]

Whispers[]

A jumble of whispers can be heard at various points throughout the game, most commonly when the Marker Symbols appear.

  • "Death is the answer."
  • "Death is the beginning."
  • "Embrace the beginning."
  • "Stop them. They must all die."
  • "Too late now. Death is coming."
  • "It's not real, kill them all and then they'll wait for you. We'll wait for you."
  • "They must all die, do you understand? Go kill 'em, go kill 'em."
  • "They must all die. Kill them."
  • "Have to stop them. Make it stop."
  • "The end is coming."
  • "Death is the key."
  • "That's the key, it's coming."
  • "You don't understand, we'll wake."
  • "I can see it."
  • "We can never go back."
  • "Make us whole."
  • "There's no time."
  • "It's too late."
  • "Embrace it."
  • "The Marker will set us free."

Marker Symbols[]

DSE Dementia Egan Marker Symbols

Sam sees Marker symbols while being attacked by a crazed Egan.

At various points during the game, Sam Caldwell, Nathan McNeill, Karen Howell and Gabe Weller experience debilitating flashes that sometimes show Marker Symbols instead of human text on the doors, in dark environments, devastated rooms or ventilation systems. These flashes with symbols also occur prior to or after the characters experience visions of monsters or other people.

Voices Talking to Sam[]

Throughout Chapter 1, Sam Caldwell is tormented by various voices belonging to people he knows, as well as an unknown voice which sounds like his own.

Lexine: (as Sam is leaping across a large gap in a catwalk) Turn back, Sam! Don't go any further!
Unknown: Egan's crazy... everyone's gone crazy...
Egan: (after the real Egan attacks Sam and is killed) I was just trying to help... it needs our help, Sam...
Unknown: Don't trust them. Don't trust anyone.
Lexine: Help me, Sam... I'm scared...
Unknown: They all have to die. You know that, don't you?
Unknown: You're going the wrong way...
Unknown: Death is the answer, Sam... it's so obvious...
Unknown: Don't tell Lexine! Don't tell her anything!
Lexine: I love you... it loves you...
Unknown: Did you hear that? Why aren't you listening?
Sterling: Why did you let me go alone, Sam? Why?
Unknown: We're all going to die down here!
Banks: Look out! They're all around you!
Cooper: (as Sam is surrounded) You've got a job to do... and you know what it is...
Lexine: (after Sam's death) Sam... I love you.

Monstrous Miners[]

In Chapter 1, Sam Caldwell starts to see his fellow miners as monsters, usually preceded by bright flashes and Marker symbols. It is unknown how many of these miners are entirely imaginary and how many are in fact distortions of Sam's colleagues (at least one of them is Sterling).

Egan's Ghost[]

DeadSpaceExtractionEganGhostHallu

Egan on Sam's RIGlink.

In Chapter 1, after restoring the oxygen levels to the Colony, Sam Caldwell receives a transmission from Lexine congratulating him for fixing the colony's life support. However, during the communication, Lexine is replaced by a vision of Egan with bulging eyes surrounded by Marker symbols, who asks Sam: "Why did you kill me? I'm not a monster."

Egan is also seen later on in the game. After the encounter with Nicole, during the spacewalk, Egan's dead body can be seen floating. The camera zooms on his face, which then turns into the same monstrous face seen on the miners in Chapter 1.

Nightmare Morgue[]

DSE Morgue Skull

The skull seen by McNeill.

In Chapter 5, while McNeill is waiting for the other survivors to meet him in the Morgue, he sees a transparent skull appear for a second, alarming him and causing him to quickly remove his helmet. Immediately afterward, he glimpses the body of Captain Mathius sitting up on the Morgue's table. However, he is lying dead again when McNeill quickly turns for a look.

Invisible Fan[]

In Chapter 6, McNeill is stopped by Weller from walking into a fan that he hallucinates as an open tunnel.

Voices Talking to Howell[]

In Chapter 7, Karen Howell is tormented by several unknown voices.

Male Voice #1: Somebody help... don't leave me here...
Male Voice #2: Don't leave us here! Don't leave us to die!
Female Voice: Behind you! Look out!
Female Voice: (singing) There's no way out...
Female Voice: Help! Help me!
Female Voice: (after Howell calls out for any survivors) They're all dead... You should join them...
Male Voice #1: They're in the walls!
Male Voice #1: What are you, a coward?
Female Voice: You shouldn't have run... you shouldn't have left them...
Gabe Weller: Open fire!
Female Voice: (whispering) Over here! Quickly!
Male Voice #2: It's all a lie... it's all a game...
Male Voice #1: You don't know anything... it's sacred...
Female Voice: You should have listened to me. Why won't you listen?
Female Voice: We have to stop it... we have to make it whole...

Nightmare Hallway[]

As Dr. Howell descends on an elevator, Marker symbols flash and the doors open repeatedly to reveal a red hallway covered with symbols, a dismembered corpse, and a Leaper, which lunges at her. After the elevator doors actually open, Howell exits to the real hallway, which repeatedly switches between being normal and "nightmarish". At the same time, she hears voices and sees visions of Enhanced Slashers lunging at her.

Male Voice: It's coming...
Whispers #1: Too late now.
Whispers #2: We'll wait for you.
Whispers #3: Embrace it. Embrace it.
Whispers #4: What have you done?
Whispers #5: Death is the answer. Death awaits.
Male Voice: (laughing maniacally)
Whispers #6: Make me whole...

Lexine Talking to Weller[]

In Chapter 8, Gabe Weller hears Lexine's voice after leaving her with McNeill to go look for a shuttle with Eckhardt.

Lexine: It's so dark in here… I'm scared…
Lexine: Why did you leave me with him…? Why didn't you protect me?!

Imaginary Necromorphs[]

DSE Eckhardt Slasher Vision

Weller sees Eckhardt as a Slasher.

Throughout the game, various characters see Necromorphs that are not there, and even other people as Necromorphs.

In Chapter 8, Weller turns around and sees a Slasher in the place of Warren Eckhardt.

Voices Talking to McNeill[]

In Chapter 9, McNeill is tormented by several voices after leaving Lexine and Gabe Weller.

Eckhardt: (after Weller says that Eckhardt lost his mind) It's not true, of course. Weller's insane.
Lexine: I feel so empty... so hollow...
Weller: McNeill! Over here!
Male Voice: What's that? There! No, there!
Weller: It's coming, McNeill. You can't escape it.
Lexine: I can feel them... all around...
Male Voice: You better hurry! Or Weller's gonna kick your ass!
Lexine: Nate... help me, please...
Lexine: Nate, don't leave me...
Weller: You're going to kill us all, soldier. We're going to die, and it will all be your fault!
Male Voice: Oh God, help! Help me!
Lexine: Get me out of here! Help!
Male Voice: (as McNeill is forced to cut his arm off) What are you waiting for, Nate? You know what you have to do...

Imaginary Passengers[]

DSE Imaginary Passengers

The imaginary passengers staring at McNeill.

At a tram station near the entrance to the Bridge, McNeill sees a group of people sitting on the benches. Suddenly, they all turn their heads and stare at him in an angry manner. McNeill turns away for a brief moment, but when he looks again, one of them is now standing very close to him, still glaring. Then, all the passengers vanish in a flash followed by Marker symbols.

Mathius in the Captain's Nest[]

DSE Mathius Ghost

Mathius screaming at McNeill.

In Chapter 9, when McNeill enters the Captain's Nest of the Bridge, he sees Captain Mathius sitting in the Captain's chair. As McNeill moves closer, Mathius suddenly turns his head toward him with the medical needle sticking out from his eye and screams.

Monstrous Lexine[]

DSE Lexine Ghost

The monstrous Lexine lunging at McNeill.

On his way to deactivate the Asteroid Defense System to escape from the Ishimura safely, McNeill searches a supply room and finds Lexine sitting in a corner, crying and asking for help. McNeill approaches in confusion, and Lexine suddenly lunges at him with a monstrous face before vanishing as Marker symbols flash.

Marker Calling to McNeill[]

As McNeill succumbs to his wounds aboard the escape shuttle, his vision is flooded with Marker symbols speeding past blurred views of Gabe Weller's squad, Lexine, a red-lit hallway and Eckhardt. At the same time, the voices of the dead Karklins and Eckhardt are heard informing McNeill that the Marker is calling to him. The view then shifts to Aegis VII, the Marker brilliantly glowing red on its pedestal while the Marker's "Sumus hic in morte; noster sanctus est"[1] chant plays, before violently shifting to a scene of an Infector creating a Slasher interspersed between shots of the Marker emitting a bright light, symbolizing McNeill's imminent transformation into a Necromorph.[2]

Karklins: It's calling to us... Don't you see?
Eckhardt: Death is not the end...
Karklins: Now, maybe you'll understand...

Dead Space (2008) and Dead Space (2023)[]

Whispers (2008)[]

Several times throughout the original Dead Space, strange whispers are heard. Because of the low volume and the numerous voices, it is very difficult to understand what they are saying. Sometimes, a voice will mention the ship's systems or even call out to Isaac. A female voice may also be heard whispering dialogue relating to Jane Gauthier, a C.E.C Security Officer who appeared on the website No Known Survivors. Such dialogue lines include:

  • "Persistence may be labeled as obsession if you indulge and persist, you objectify the subject. Also be mindful of psychological rejection."
  • "After graduating, she took a security management position with CEC in their space vessel assembly plant."
  • "Voice analysis of the audio log detects various indicators of positive communication and physical behavior."
  • "Genealogy and background report complete, sources verified, subject Gauthier Jane."
  • "Gauthier's paternal grandparents reside in the populous zones in North Carolina."
  • "Her grandfather manages the shuttle convoy and Gauthier's grandmother cooks in the east wing cafeteria."
  • "A desire for social interaction, physical contact, affection or support may lead you to make poor judgments of decisions in multiple areas."

The first time Isaac will hear these voices is during Chapter 1, in the corridor right after obtaining the Stasis Module. From then on the whispers can be heard in almost every room with no active enemies, should the player stand still and wait.

Whispers (2023)[]

In the 2023 remake, the whispers are divided by character, area, and chapter. As characters die throughout the story, they go into the "whisper pool" so they can haunt Isaac from beyond the grave. Over time, they grow more creepy to highlight Isaac's deteriorating mental state.[3] Notably, some of these whispers are said by the voices of Nicole Brennan, Zach Hammond, Aiden Chen, Hailey Johnston and Challus Mercer. Several of them also play in reverse, making them unintelligible during a normal play session.

The following is a list of these whispers, as confirmed via text files extracted from the remake:

  • "Welcome to the Ishimura."
  • "The Ishimura welcomes you."
  • "Recombination of dead tissue."

Nicole: Isaac, where are you? It's me...
Isaac: Nicole? I'm here. Nicole! Damn it...

Vanishing Man[]

DSR Make Us Whole Again

The vanishing man.

The Vanishing Man appears in Chapter 4 in a room immediately after Isaac gets off an elevator. The door across the room opens and a bloody man says, "Make us whole again" before walking back behind the door and vanishing where an Enhanced Slasher and a Pregnant are lurking.

You cannot chase after him, since there is an invisible barrier at the doorway until the Vanishing Man despawns from the game. He resembles a battered Chen in the original game.

Marker Symbols on the Monitors[]

DSR Marker 3A Messages

Isaac seeing Marker symbols on the screens.

As Isaac progresses throughout the USG Ishimura, the influence of the Marker becomes more visible. One of the signs are monitors showing the Marker Symbols.

Hologram of Nicole[]

DSR Isaac Touches Nicole Hallucination

Isaac "touches" his first vision of Nicole.

In Chapter 5, after turning off the fake transmission from Nicole set up by Challus Mercer, Isaac turns around and sees a hallucination of her as a hologram speaking to him, before he reaches out to touch her with his right hand.

Nicole: Isaac... Isaac, make us whole again.

Nicole Asking for Help[]

"Nicole" tries to contact Isaac on the Hydroponics Deck.

During Chapter 6, a live video call from Nicole is opened in front of Isaac, with her once again asking where he is.

Later in the chapter, Isaac hears Nicole trying to contact him again, this time only through audio.

Nicole: Isaac... Please, I need you. Help me.

Nicole on the Mining Deck[]

DSR Marker Nicole Mining Deck

"Nicole" appears to Isaac on the Mining Deck.

Nicole first appears in person to Isaac in Chapter 7. Isaac defends her against the Necromorphs from a distance while she unlocks the storage room containing the S.O.S. beacon.

Nicole: Isaac. Oh my god. I can't believe you're here.
Isaac: I... thought I'd never see you again. I'm gonna get us home. There's an SOS beacon nearby. We can call for help.
Nicole: The beacon? Right, they locked it in the workshop, but my clearance can get us in. This way!

The two then move into the next room.

Nicole: I can unlock the workshop from here.
Isaac: Nicole, there's so much I need to tell you...
Nicole: I know - we'll have time, I promise. Let's get you that beacon. Everyone's counting on us.

Necromorphs then begin to attack Isaac and Nicole.

Nicole: Oh shit, they're here!
Isaac: Keep working! I'll hold them off!

After Isaac kills all of the Necromorphs, the workshop door opens.

Nicole: It's done. The workshop's open. I've never seen you at work. You're a surgeon with that thing.
Isaac: I got your back. Okay, how do I reach you...
Nicole: No, focus on launching that SOS beacon. There's maintenance ducts everywhere. I'll catch up.
Isaac: You see any more, you hide. Okay?
Nicole: Cross my heart. I love you, Isaac. You can do this. You'll put things back the way they were. And make us whole again.

A security recording that can only be found in New Game+ reveals that Isaac was actually talking to Elizabeth Cross.[4]

Johnston and Chen[]

In Chapter 10, as he walks down the corridor leading to the Mess Hall, Isaac hears the voices of Hailey Johnston and Aiden Chen.

Johnston: You ready to hit the bar?
Chen: We've sure as hell earned it. First the crash, then nothing working around here...

Chen's voice suddenly gets much louder, speaking directly to Isaac.

Chen: But you're on it, right Isaac? Everything's going to be just like it was.

"Turn It Off" Message[]

DSR Turn It Off

The "Turn it off" message appears as Isaac's objective.

After hearing Chen's voice, Isaac's objective switches to a message written in Marker Symbols which, when translated, tells him to "Turn it off", referring to the Alien Machine keeping the Tau Volantis Moon frozen.

Corpses Talking to Isaac[]

DSR Talking Corpses

The corpses that "speak" to Isaac.

Upon entering Mercer's room on the Crew Deck when following Nicole's side quest, Isaac feels a wave of pain in his head before the monitors in front of him show a recording of his argument with Nicole following Octavia and Poul's deaths, with Isaac angrily blaming her for what happened to his parents. After the recording ends, Isaac hears Nicole's voice.

Nicole: Isaac, it's me. I wish I could talk to you. I'm sorry. I'm sorry about everything.
Isaac: She wanted to talk... I didn't lose her. I can make it right. I can save us both.

Marker Ritual Whispers[]

DSR Ritual Complete

Isaac hears whispers and sees symbols after completing the Marker Fragment ritual.

After entering Captain Benjamin Mathius' room, Isaac finds a table with twelve lit candles and a small Marker replica. Interacting with the table causes him to hear whispers:

Whispers: You can make us whole again.

If Isaac collects all twelve Marker Fragments and places them on the table, he hears the following whispers:

Whispers: We are whole. You will know. You will see. Like we see you.

"Make Us Whole Again" Message[]

After Isaac sends Marker 3A to the shuttle bay, his objective briefly reads "Make us whole again" in Marker symbols.

Hammond's Voice[]

In Chapter 11, a quarantine lockdown occurs when Isaac is in the Flight Lounge, forcing him to fight a wave of Necromorphs in the room. During this fight, Isaac hears Zach Hammond's voice.

Hammond: Can't take chances with the CEC's pride and joy.
Hammond: I'm done playing around!
Hammond: I lost them both.
Hammond: We were dead from the start.

Nicole Recalling the Shuttle[]

DSR Isaac and Marker Nicole

Nicole: Isaac? Come in! It's Nicole!
Isaac: Where are you?
Nicole: In the Flight Control Room. Please, you have to come up here, now. There's still a way out for us, but we don't have much time!

Isaac then makes his way to the Flight Control Room and meets Nicole in person. If Isaac did not complete Nicole's side quest, the following dialogue plays:

Nicole: You made it.
Isaac: I tried to find you. Half the Ishimura's coming apart. And the other half's swarming with those things. How did you get here?
Nicole: You cleared the way. I can always count on you.
Isaac: Not this time. Daniels screwed me over.
Nicole: You couldn't have known she would take the Marker.
Isaac: She left us to die.
Nicole: There's still hope. You can recall the shuttle and remote-pilot it from here. Bring back the Marker, and we can return it to Aegis VII. You can make us whole again.
Isaac: I just don't know what to believe any more.
Nicole: It's okay, Isaac. You'll know what to do.

If Isaac completed Nicole's side quest, the following dialogue plays:

Nicole: There you are.
Isaac: Thank god you're here. The ship's coming apart. I saw what you've been through. Your investigation, Mercer... What happened with us.
Nicole: We don't have to talk about it.
Isaac: I need you to know I'm sorry, about everything.
Nicole: It's okay, Isaac. You know I forgive you. I love you.
Isaac: Well, good, but...
Nicole: There's still hope. You can recall the shuttle and remote-pilot it from here. Bring back the Marker, and we can return it to Aegis VII. You can make us whole again.
Isaac: I just want to make things right.
Nicole: Then let's do it together.

After Isaac recalls the shuttle, Daniels leaves via escape pod.

Isaac: Escape pod... Damn. We lost her.
Nicole: It doesn't matter. She can't escape her fate. But who can?

The hangar bay doors open and the shuttle lands once again.

Nicole: Here it comes. Isaac...
Isaac: I know. The Ishimura's finished. If we get on that shuttle, there's no going back.
Nicole: Leave no regrets. Go - I'll reprogram the shuttle with our flight path to Aegis VII, and join you on board.

If Isaac did not complete Nicole's side quest, the following dialogue plays:

Isaac: You'll be watching my back?
Nicole: Cross my heart.

If Isaac completed Nicole's side quest, the following dialogue plays:

Isaac: Don't leave me waiting.
Nicole: Never again.

Nicole in the Shuttle[]

DSR Isaac and Marker Nicole Shuttle

Isaac and "Nicole" pilot the shuttle to Aegis VII.

After boarding the shuttle, Isaac sits in the pilot seat and Nicole soon joins him.

Nicole: I never doubted you, Isaac. I knew you'd come back for me.
Isaac: Are you ready?
Nicole: Yes. We're together again. Nothing can stop us now.

The two then fly the shuttle out of the hangar and towards Aegis VII.

Nicole: This isn't how I imagined saying goodbye to the Ishimura.

Isaac then clutches his head in pain from the Marker's effects. If Isaac did not complete Nicole's side quest, the following dialogue plays:

Nicole: Steady...
Isaac: I'm good.
Nicole: Are you afraid, Isaac?
Isaac: No. There's no going back.
Nicole: It's easier, when there's nowhere to go but forward.

If Isaac completed Nicole's side quest, the following dialogue plays:

Nicole: Steady...
Isaac: I'm good.
Nicole: Are you afraid, Isaac?
Isaac: No. With you I can handle anything.
Nicole: One more ride together, then.

If Isaac collected all twelve Marker fragments and placed them on the ritual table, the following dialogue plays instead:

Nicole: Steady...
Isaac: It's... loud, isn't it.
Nicole: Are you afraid, Isaac?
Isaac: No. There's nothing to fear.
Nicole: You've come so far.

The shuttle begins to approach Aegis VII.

Nicole: This all began in the core of the planet.
Isaac: Daniels said EarthGov built the Marker. Some experiment they abandoned hundreds of years ago.

Finally, the shuttle lands on the colony.

Nicole: If you're not ready, a miracle must be as terrifying as a nightmare. The planet is restless. Hungry. It'll try to eat us alive. But we have the Marker. We'll put things back the way they were. We will be whole again...

Nicole on the Colony[]

DSR Nicole and Marker

"Nicole" walking with the Marker on Aegis VII.

After Isaac exits the shuttle, he finds Nicole standing in front of it.

Nicole: Isaac, now's our chance!
Isaac: Nicole-?
Nicole: You can unload the Marker from the console. Come on!

After Isaac unloads the Marker, Nicole points towards the sky.

Nicole: Look. A light in the sky.
Isaac: The gravity tethers on the Ishimura are failing. The tectonic load... We don't have long before all that rock falls. How do we do this?
Nicole: We return the Marker to its pedestal. The loading track leads directly to the excavation site. It'll work. The Hive Mind will obey. We'll be whole again... and you and I can be together. Come on. We need to hurry.

As Isaac progresses, Nicole walks into the colony's control room.

Nicole: You guide the Marker, Isaac. I'll help from the control room.

As Isaac makes his way through the colony, he is contacted by Nicole several times.

Nicole: The Marker's signal changes us. Recombines us. But there's a dead space in that signal, around the Marker itself. The eye of the storm. They can't stay in it for long.
Isaac: I've seen it. But this pedestal - why there?
Nicole: It amplifies. The Marker's pulse will be felt across the planet. The dead will sleep. And the living will see what can't be forgotten.

If Isaac did not complete Nicole's side quest, the following dialogue plays:

Nicole: Do you miss them, Isaac?
Isaac: The Kellion team? Yeah.
Nicole: Medical emptied day by day. My friends left, came back in body bags - then came back. You wonder... is it insanity if everyone else sees what you see?
Isaac: I'd never have left you in that place. You know that.
Nicole: It was my one bright, shining star in that darkness. "Isaac will find me."

If Isaac completed Nicole's side quest, the following dialogue plays:

Nicole: Do you miss them, Isaac?
Isaac: The Kellion team? Yeah.
Nicole: And your parents? Your mother was a Unitologist. She believed.
Isaac: She believed so much it killed her. Is this what she would have wanted?
Nicole: If she did, would that make this easier?
Isaac: Maybe it's a good thing I'll never know.

If Isaac collected all twelve Marker fragments and placed them on the ritual table, the following dialogue plays instead:

Nicole: Do you miss them, Isaac?
Isaac: The Kellion team? Yeah.
Nicole: They think they're dead. What do you think?
Isaac: The Marker saw who they really were. It'll remember them.

Isaac eventually comes across a part of the colony without power.

Nicole: Isaac, there's no power in this section. The Marker won't move. We're losing time...
Isaac: It's okay - hit "test connection". What's it say?
Nicole: "Power failure detected. Tether generator, gravity control."
Isaac: One of the groundside gravity tethers. Maybe a busted power line... I'm on it.
Nicole: Please, hurry. We can't fail now.

After Isaac fixes the tether, Nicole contacts him.

Nicole: You've done it, Isaac. Power's flowing again. Come back to the Marker, quickly. The excavation site's just up ahead. Make us whole...

Isaac soon reaches the excavation site with the Marker.

Nicole: You're almost there, Isaac. Get the Marker to the pedestal - hurry!
Nicole: Please, Isaac. The Hive Mind is coming - you have to make us whole!
Nicole: There. Now reunite it with the pedestal!

DSR Marker Nicole Imprint

"Nicole" alongside the restored Marker as it imprints itself onto Isaac's mind.

After Isaac places the Marker on the pedestal, it releases a burst of energy and begins to implant its signal and mental blueprints in Isaac's head, causing him to collapse for a brief moment. Nicole appears, walking past him and standing beside the Marker.

Nicole: Thank you, Isaac. I always believed in you.
Isaac: Nicole...
Nicole: We're whole again. We are whole.

The Marker then emits an even more powerful energy wave, with the resulting EMP knocking out the colony's gravity tethers.

Isaac: The payload. I'll restart the tether - buy us time.
Nicole: Go.

Nicole Attacks Isaac[]

Snapshot-deadspace2023end-3

A bloodied "Nicole" lunges at Isaac.

At the very end of the game, a ghostly vision of Nicole is seen looking similar to the one from Dead Space 2, except without the glowing mouth and eyes. She appears after Isaac looks to his right and sees her, hearing her voice say "I wish I could just talk to someone". She then screams in Isaac's face with Marker Symbols flashing around her and him before the screen fades and the credits start to roll.

Isaac Builds a Marker for Nicole[]

If Isaac collected all twelve Marker fragments and placed them on the ritual table, he is seen looking deranged on the shuttle, the interior of the cockpit covered with Marker symbols and scrawlings. Nicole's bloodied apparition appears from behind him, placing her hand on his shoulder. Isaac places his hand on hers and smiles.

Nicole: The Ishimura really was a great ship.
Isaac: Yeah, we were lucky to see her in her prime.
Nicole: Are we going home, Isaac? There's so much work to do...
Isaac: Soon, I promise. Gotta build a little something first.
Nicole: For me? What is it?
Isaac: It's a surprise, sweetie. But I think you're gonna like it.

The camera then pans out to show Nicole's empty RIG and Isaac's scrawlings alongside his discarded helmet on the floor, before fading to black.

Dead Space (Mobile)[]

Nightmarish Node Room[]

NightmarishNodeRoom

At the start of Chapter 2, if Vandal immediately goes left and enters the game's first Power Node Room (assuming that she has at least one Power Node), she finds several chests with items inside. Opening the chest at the far end of the room reveals a Power Node. Once Vandal takes the Node and walks away, the room goes into quarantine. Limbs are scattered on the floor and graffiti is covering every wall. The hallucination lasts for several seconds. After it ends, Vandal shakes her head and looks around.

Mirror Image[]

MirrorImage

Midway through Chapter 2, Vandal enters a room to retrieve the Stasis Module. There is a wall with windows in it situated in the middle of the room. Vandal has to walk around this wall to reach the Stasis Module. However, if Vandal actually looks through the glass, a doppelganger of Vandal can be seen on the other side of the room. The doppelganger cannot be interacted with as it is only possible to see it through the glass and if Vandal attempts to go around the wall, the doppelganger is visible on the side of the room that she just left through the glass.

Trapped Room with the Necromorphs[]

Toward the end of Chapter 2, Vandal enters a bloodstained room with the corpses of several Slashers. A Guardian is also heard wailing although it cannot be physically seen. After defeating the three Slashers that were only feigning death, Vandal is transported back to the previous corridor and shakes her head in confusion. Despite entering the same corridor, Vandal ends up in a different room with no visible bodies and no evidence of the Guardian, suggesting that the first room was a hallucination.

Dead Bodies and Necromorphs[]

Early in Chapter 3, when Vandal explores a room, the lights dim for a second. When they come back on, the room is filled with dead bodies and blood on the walls. The lights dim again and the room returns to normal. The same thing happens in the following room except that a Slasher and two Lurkers appear and disappear. Vandal comments, "Tyler, I'm seeing shit that's not real."

Vandal as a Slasher[]

IPod-1 036

Vandal imagining herself as a Slasher.

In Chapter 4, when Vandal enters a rocky tunnel, the lights flicker. Every time that the lights flicker on, Vandal alternates between herself and a Slasher until the lights stay on and she remains a Slasher. Further down the tunnel, the process repeats, returning Vandal to normal. Vandal questions, "What the fuck is going on?".

Reflection[]

DeadSpaceMobileReflectionHallu

In Chapter 5, Vandal hears something and yells out, "Hey, who's down here?". Turning around a corner, she comes across a figure that looks exactly like her and moves the same way that she does. When Vandal gets close to the reflection, it turns into a Slasher and grabs her. This also occurs in Chapter 8.

Necromorph Face[]

Dsmobile watre processing necroface

In Chapter 6, after Vandal enters a long tubular hallway, the field of view begins to enlarge. Suddenly, the face of an unknown Necromorph type, presumably a Slasher, begins to slowly fade into the screen and fade out. As the player is most likely disoriented and scared by this hallucination, a Pregnant jumps in from a nearby vent in front of Vandal.

This is Not the Way[]

In Chapter 8, Vandal enters a small collection of rooms that all lead back to the first room. Blindly walking through the rooms without any sense of direction only leads Vandal back to the first room unless she follows a trail of blood from a corpse found in the first room. If the player does so, the Necromorph face that appeared in the corridor in Chapter 6 fades into the screen again, presumably as a warning of the hallucination.

The door signs also inexplicably change to read "This is not the way", although this is likely to confuse Vandal and only by following the blood trail through the rooms can she escape the area. Interestingly, Vandal does not seem to notice that this is a hallucination or at least does not react to it.

Brutish Hallucination[]

DeadSpaceMobileHalluBrute

In Chapter 11, when Vandal enters a room with 2 Power Nodes, the lights go out and when the lights come back on, a Brute appears before her and attacks. The lights then go out again and when they come back on, the Brute is gone. Vandal says, "I'm losing it".

Marker in the Desert[]

In Chapter 11, Vandal encounters this hallucination twice. The first time is as she goes through a hallway heading to an exterior route to the Reactor Core. But, instead of seeing a hallway, she sees a Marker in a vast desert. She comments on this, "I don't know what's real anymore..." Eventually, as she moves closer to the Marker, a woman is heard sobbing and an image of a Necromorph face appears on the screen.

The next time it is encountered is still in Chapter 11. When Vandal defeats a Brute, she then has to confront her fears. At first, it seems like several Brutes break into the room. The game breaks the fourth wall and makes it appear like the battery power of the device that the game is playing on was low and the screen goes black.

Initially, the screen blacks out and comes back gray and is covered in bloody graffiti. When Vandal seems to regain consciousness, she sees a door in the desert and the Marker is behind her. While behind the door, there is a console. Once it is activated, the screen blacks out for a second and comes back.

Now, there is a bloody trail leading to the console in front of the Marker. Once the console is activated, the screen blacks out again and it seems as if the hallucination is over. However, the long dark hallway that Vandal goes through as she progresses is initially empty, then filled with corpses, then filled with corpses along with a reddish mist.

At the end of the hallway, she sees another console. Once it is activated, Vandal is back in the desert in front of the Marker. She also hears the crazed laughter of a woman. When she turns around, she sees a figure resembling herself beside the door. Once Vandal attacks this figure, a scream is heard as Vandal says, "Get out of my head!" and she then returns to the room where she fought the Brute.

Dead Space 2[]

Nicole During Questioning[]

As Isaac is questioned by Foster Edgars, he has visions of Nicole, his time on the USG Ishimura and the Marker. During his vision of the Marker, there is a shadowy figure standing at its base. As the figure gets closer, it walks up to the table that Isaac is sitting at, revealing it to be a bloodied version of Nicole. She climbs on top of the table as Edgars continues his questioning, unaware about her presence. She whispers, "Make us whole" as her eye sockets and mouth glow orange. She then shouts, "Make us whole!" before the screen goes white.

Necromorph Shadows[]

Deadspace2HallucinationSlasherShadow

This is the second hallucination that Isaac has in Chapter 1. After Isaac passes by a shower room, the typical dementia effect begins to affect the screen with a shadowy figure of a Slasher appearing in front of the player with Nicole saying Isaac's name.

Nicole: Isaac...

Nicole in the Elevator[]

Chapter 1 hospital

In Chapter 1, Isaac encounters Nicole during an elevator ride to Patient Care in the Titan Memorial Medical Center. The lights on the elevator flicker and die, leaving only the light from the holoscreen. After a short while, Isaac looks to the left corner of the elevator and sees Nicole singing a verse from the lullaby from Dead Space, "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star", before yelling "Make us whole!". She promptly disappears and the environment returns to normal.

Nicole in the Tram Station[]

NicoleRingAroundtheRoiseTrailer

At the end of Chapter 2, Isaac comes to a tram station. While walking through a hallway to the terminal, the environment tints orange and all of the screens around him flash on with an ominous blue face with dark eyes. The screens also show equations and Marker symbols and Isaac begins to hear Nicole's voice.

Nicole: Isaac? Are you there? I'm so cold. The needle is burning in my arm. Isaac? Where are you? The room is getting dark. I can't see you. Isaac?

When Isaac walks up into the terminal, Nicole is sitting on the back of a bench. She looks at him and screams, and the hallucination ends when a flaming tram speeds past.

Nearby Whispers[]

When Isaac reaches the Cassini Towers, whispers can be heard on the apartment corridors as part of the ambience. The log Sally 3 strongly implies that the dwellers of the Cassini Towers were aware of the upcoming Necromorph outbreak, and being Unitologists, they all prepared rituals to commit suicide. Thus, these whispers are most likely hallucinations.

Nicole in a Child's Room[]

Deadspace2HallucinationNicoleCassini

In Chapter 3, Isaac enters a Unitologist's apartment in the Cassini Towers. Once Isaac enters what seems to be a child's room, the screen flashes and Nicole is sitting on the bed. A spinning lamp on the ceiling that projects the silhouettes of horses running around the room changes to that of bloody skulls and Markers while Nicole is present. After a brief exchange, she disappears, leaving Isaac alone in the room.

Nicole: I'm afraid, Isaac. I don't want to die. But it's the only way out.
Isaac: You're not Nicole. Nicole is dead. You're not really here.

Nicole on the Screens[]

DS2 Nicole Monitors

In the Church of Unitology in Chapter 4, Nicole appears on the screens of the Observation Center the moment Isaac enters. After a threat, she disappears.

Nicole: I'm so cold, Isaac. It hurts. Where are you going? You can't run from the pain forever. Soon you'll beg for a way to end it all.

Nicole with a Needle[]

DS2 Nicole Needle

Again in Chapter 4, after Isaac gets out of a vent that he was crawling through, a QTE triggers where Nicole suddenly attacks Isaac with a medical needle, attempting to stab him in the eye while screaming "Make us whole!". If failed, Nicole jabs the needle into Isaac's right eye, killing him. He falls back with Nicole hovering over his corpse.[5] If successful, Nicole disappears, revealing that Isaac was actually trying to stab himself. Confused, he drops the needle and stares at his hands in disbelief.

Voice[]

When Isaac leaves the first Zero Gravity area, the power shuts off. When he places the Power Cell into the electrical socket, the power turns back on and he needs to call an elevator. When Isaac gets in the elevator, he hears a voice whispering: "Isaac." This can be heard many times in the game and also on the Single Player screen of the main menu.

Screaming Corpses[]

DS2 Screaming Corpses

In Chapter 5, while Isaac is walking through a Cryogenic Morgue in the Church of Unitology, the area suddenly turns orange, with the screen shaking, to have several decomposed corpses in their now shattered cryo-tubes screaming violently. If Isaac shoots these corpses, blood splatters. The scene then reverts to show that the cryo-tubes are still sealed and opaque, and the atmosphere returns to its proper white-blue composition.

Church Storage Rooms[]

DS2 Hallucination Effect

After the room with the legless Stalker, Isaac enters a room with a Marker statue sitting in the middle of it. On the other side is an elevator which takes him to the top of the Church, but not before another hallucination. Nicole talks to Isaac about the earlier suicidal attempt with the needle while the screen tints orange and everything wobbles back and forth.

Nicole: What's happening to you, Isaac? You tried to kill yourself. Why do you think that is? That's right. Ignore the pain. Bury it deep inside. Let me fester. Let me rot.

School[]

Corridor freakout DS2

Before Isaac enters the school's gym/cafeteria, he stumbles and clutches his head while bloody lockers open and slam violently. The sign above the door to his left changes to have the phrase "Make us whole" written in Marker symbols.

Nicole's Playroom[]

Deadspace2HalluciantionNicoleplayground

When Isaac reaches the Playroom, he encounters another hallucination that involves Nicole speaking to him about her nature. This is the first time that Nicole and Isaac actively hold a conversation. Similar to the previous hallucination, the sign above the door in the room has "Make us whole" written in Marker symbols.

Nicole: Still in denial? Afraid you're going to cut your wrists if you listen to me?
Isaac: I'm not listening to this. You may fool Stross, but I know you're not real.
Nicole: Oh, you claim I'm not real, and yet here I am.
Isaac: You're just a hallucination! Stross knows how to destroy you! He knows how to destroy the Marker. We will destroy you!
Nicole: How convenient. Destroy the Marker and all the hurt and pain go away. Imagine it, Isaac: You'll never have to listen to your heart.

Nicole screams at Isaac and disappears. The room returns to normal.

Nicole Solar Array Encounter[]

DS2 Nicole Solar Array

As Isaac heads up to align the Solar Array in Chapter 7, he encounters Nicole's bloody apparition sitting on the ejection seat. She disappears shortly after.

Nicole: How do you do it? How do you hold it all inside, your face never betraying your pain? No one would ever know the guilt you feel - never know the dark thoughts you keep.

CEC Lobby[]

Chapter 8 CEC lobby

Another fit happens when Isaac enters the CEC Facility from the Transport Hub. He clutches his head and stumbles for a moment as voices begin to whisper.

Whispers: We see you.

CEC Records Room[]

Chapter 8 CEC

During Chapter 8, Nicole appears in the CEC Facility's record room. She threatens Isaac from the top of a server in the corner of the room. The screens next to her flicker, showing Marker symbols and then Marker blueprints.

Nicole: The cracks are showing, Isaac, and the memories are seeping in. And when they do, I'll be waiting for you.

CEC Fuel Core Catwalks #1[]

Chapter 8 CEC fuel core 1

There are 3 catwalks where Isaac hears Nicole speaking to him.

Nicole: We only had two years, Isaac. Two years, but they were the best years of my life. I was happy - I had everything I wanted. Until you made me doubt myself.

CEC Fuel Core Catwalks #2[]

Chapter 8 CEC fuel core 2

Nicole: Why would I choose the Ishimura over you? You said I'd regret passing up the chance - that the choice would haunt me forever. It was as if you wanted me to leave.

CEC Fuel Core Catwalks #3[]

Chapter 8 CEC fuel core 3

Nicole: And when you received my final transmission, you couldn't bear to watch the end, could you? You knew what had happened, yet you went looking for me anyway. You knew deep down all you would find was death.

Nicole on the Tram[]

Chapter 8 CEC fuel core 4

During Chapter 9, while making his way through a maintenance area to repair a tram, Isaac constantly hears incomprehensible talking over the static of his radio. After fixing the tram and using it, he has another hallucination of Nicole walking towards him, prompting him to yell and scream at the hallucination that she is not Nicole and for it to get out of his head. Nicole disappears after that. Isaac begins to show just how much the hallucinations are affecting him, yelling in frustration and grief.

Nicole: Why did you come looking for me if you knew I was dead, Isaac? Did you think I would forgive you?
Isaac: Get out of my head! You're not Nicole!
Nicole: Who am I, Isaac?!

Nicole at the Flight Deck[]

Chapter 10 flight deck

Early in Chapter 10, Nicole whispers:

Nicole: You can pretend not to be bothered, but being here rattles you, doesn't it Isaac? All this plastic and tape covering the scars - trying to hide the blood and the bodies so no one will ever know. But you remember what happened - no matter how deeply you try to bury it.

Voices of the Dead[]

Chapter 10 flight deck2

Inside Tram Control, Isaac finds a malfunctioning computer. Several different recordings are heard through the static, commenting on the inability to sleep, panic, supply hoarding, the situation on the Aegis VII Colony and the arrival of Marker 3A on the Ishimura. The audio log later found on the Bridge states that all of the records were deleted since they contradicted the official cover story from EarthGov.

Voice #1: I can't sleep, I can't eat. Ever since we got here, I've been having horrible nightmares. I need it to stop! Please make it stop!
Voice #2: All I could get for you are these sleeping pills. People have been hoarding the good stuff - it's getting hard to find. God, I'd kill for something to numb this headache!
Voice #1: Why is this happening? Is anyone finding out why this is happening? It's like they're not telling us something. Why all the secrecy?
Voice #2: I don't know but I heard this is how it started on the colony. Look, do you want the pills or not? I need a buyer today.

Voice #3: Flight Control, this is flight I-S-H-one-five-one. Requesting permission to land.
Voice #4: This is flight control. Welcome back. Your shuttle has been authorized to land. Did you get it? Are the rumors true?
Voice #3: Roger, we have the payload and it is glorious. Altman be praised.
Voice #4: Roger that. I am notifying Captain Mathius and sending out a team to retrieve the payload.

Voice #5: We're getting conflicting reports from the colony. Can you say again?
Voice #6: Over a hundred dead on the colony. Most from violent crimes, suicides.
Voice #5: God, what's happening down there?
Voice #6: I don't know, I was just glad to get the hell out of there. It's like they're all going crazy down there.

Drag Tentacle Flashback[]

Deadspace2HalucinationDragTentacle

After restarting the USG Ishimura's Gravity Centrifuge. Isaac re-encounters the first Drag Tentacle in the Engineering hallway. It appears in the same manner as it did in the original Dead Space, but disappears soon after latching on to Isaac's leg, leaving Isaac still standing and grasping his head in pain.

Medical Deck Tram Station[]

Chapter 10 medical deck1

When Isaac arrives at the Medical Deck, he hears Nicole speaking to him.

Nicole: The Ishimura Medical Deck, Isaac. These were my last hours. Frightened, cold, alone. Well, go on Isaac. Don't be shy.

Nicole Suicide Flashback[]

Chapter 10 suicide

While making his way through the Medical Deck of the Ishimura, Isaac arrives at the room where the Hunter was created. He has a flashback of the later parts of Nicole's transmission on the screens from the desk, showing her suicide. Towards the end of the recording, the screen suddenly flashes, showing Nicole's horribly deformed face moaning and screaming at Isaac.

Medical Deck Lobby[]

Chapter 10 lobby

Nicole: You never found my body, never said goodbye. Was I just stacked in the Morgue with the others? Another random casualty? Or did they turn me into one of them? Wearing my bloodied face, stalking the halls looking for more victims...

Medical Deck Tram Way[]

Chapter 10 tramways

Nicole: The barrier between us is wearing thin, Isaac. Behind every tarp... a memory. Behind every door of the passage of time from when I lived to when I died.
Isaac: You're not going to break me.
Nicole: Why do you keep insisting these unpleasant memories are somehow my fault? This isn't about the Marker, Isaac. This is about you.

Brute Flashback[]

Chapter 10 brute

As Isaac made his way through the room before the Bridge, he has another flashback. This time, Isaac is at the Atrium window where the Brute smashed its fist through the window. Curiously, it does not happen in the same manner as it did in Dead Space because in the first game, the Brute's face/head smashed through immediately after its fist punched through, but in the flashback, it is only the Brute's fist that punches through.

Voices Singing[]

On the Bridge of the USG Ishimura, at the room with the escape pods outside the Captain's Nest, two voices can be heard faintly singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". It can best be heard by standing on or near the elevator platform.

Nicole on the Bridge[]

DS2 Nicole Escape Pod

Near the end of Chapter 10, after using the gravity tethers to realign the tram lines leading to the Government Sector, Isaac heads to the escape pod. However, Nicole suddenly appears in front of it, blocking Isaac's escape. Nicole eventually vanishes, allowing Isaac to board the escape pod.

Nicole: Where are you going, Isaac? Do you still think I'm something you can avoid?
Isaac: I don't know! I don't know what you are, okay?

Titan Mines Entrance[]

Deadspace2HallucinationNicoleCrash

After crashing the escape pod and blacking out, Isaac sees a memory of his video call with Nicole thanking him for encouraging her to take the Ishimura assignment. The image of Nicole is projected onto the surface of a Marker, while her bloodied apparition stands in front of it, her face down. The fog horn-like sound of a Convergence Event is heard in the background. Nicole's video call focuses on the words, "You made me stick with it", before her bloodied hallucination looks up and screams "You made me die!" as the entire scene vanishes.

Nicole in the Mines[]

Chapter 11 nicole mines

This happens shortly after Isaac kills Nolan Stross after he tries to stab him in the eye in the same manner as he did to Ellie Langford.

Nicole: It's a shame what happened to Stross. That's what happens when you fight it.
Isaac: Shut up! Just shut up! The Marker... It was you... You made him do it! You made me kill him, didn't you?!
Nicole: How is it that you still haven't come to terms with who I am? Who am I, Isaac? I will ask one more time before the end. Be ready.

As Isaac opens a door, Nicole suddenly grabs him by his neck and a quick-time event is started. Nicole demands that Isaac finally confess who she really is to him.

Nicole: Moment of truth, Isaac! Who am I? Am I your friend? Your lover? The one shred; one light; one bright, shining star you clung to in this Universe? Or am I your guilt? Crushing the life out of you because you can't get over the fact that I'm dead? That you feel responsible? Who am I? Why do you keep fighting me? Why can't you let go?

If the player wins the QTE, the following conversation happens:

Isaac: Because you were my everything. And if I let you go, I've got nothing left.

Nicole drops Isaac and changes back to what Nicole looked like when she was alive. She smiles at Isaac tenderly as she reveals what the last step in his journey will be.

Nicole: Step four: acceptance. Now you're ready to finish this.

If the player fails the QTE, the following conversation happens:

Isaac: You're nothing! You can't hurt me. You're not real. You can't hurt me!
Nicole: WRONG.

Nicole snaps Isaac's neck and drops his body. In reality, Isaac may have snapped his own neck.

EarthGov Docking Bay[]

Chapter 13 docking bay

This is right after Isaac launches the gunship that Ellie is in.

Nicole: Are you ready to talk now?
Isaac: Why? So I can let you go too? I can't do that, Nicole. I never wanted to let you go.
Nicole: A lot happened that we never wanted. Isaac... touch me.
Isaac: I don't think that's a good idea.
Nicole: Isaac, please. Make us whole.
Isaac: I can't.

Project Telomere Lobby[]

DS2 Nicole Shows the Way

Nicole: Isaac, where are you going?
Isaac: I don't know.
Nicole: That's why I'm here, Isaac... To show you the way.

Nicole creates an orange line, similar to Isaac's objective locator.

Project Telomere Halls[]

Chapter 13 telomere2

Isaac clutches his head.

Isaac: What is that? I can feel it in my head.
Nicole: We're getting closer, Isaac. The Marker knows you're here.
Isaac: I still don't know what to do.
Nicole: When the time comes, you will.

Direct Marker Access Halls #1[]

Isaac: Oh my God. I built that? What are they doing?
Nicole: They're all coming to the Marker. Convergence is at hand...
Tiedemann: Clarke! I knew you were trouble from the start, but they told me you were necessary. That your mind was the purest. I spent years sifting through your demented brain! This is not the way it was supposed to happen!
Isaac: Well, how was it supposed to happen, Tiedemann?!
Tiedemann: We had it under control! Clarke, this is not our fault! We were so close to understanding it!

Suddenly, the facility begins to shake violently as a loud trumpeting sound, almost similar to a foghorn, is heard.

Tiedemann: What? It's all those bodies. All those bodies you let in here! It's triggering a Convergence Event. But we never expected this many bodies...

The Marker activates a massive shockwave as Isaac looks on.

Isaac: Why? What the hell is it doing?
Nicole: What it was made to do. Isaac, you have to make us whole.

Noonlight Diagnostics Machine[]

Isaac: The Machine, just like Stross said. I remember this. The machine activates the parts of our brain where the Marker codes are stored. But how does that threaten the Marker? What were they afraid of?
Nicole: Me. Us. Working together.
Isaac: Step four.
Nicole: Yes. Are you ready?
Isaac: This is going to hurt, isn't it?
Nicole: Yes. Step inside.
Nicole: Step one: Crawl inside. Step two: The screws go tight, all around. Cross my heart and hope to die... Stick a needle in your eye.

When the machine's needle penetrates Isaac's eye, his vision tints orange and Marker symbols flash in front of his eyes with the message "The World Must End". After exiting the machine, he looks around for Nicole and sees her engulfed in a blinding light.

Isaac: Nicole. Where are you?
Nicole: Follow the light, Isaac. I'll be waiting for you at the Marker.
Isaac: But what do I do? Dammit!

Direct Marker Access Halls #2[]

Chapter 13 telomere9

Isaac clutches his head and Marker symbols flash in his vision.

Nicole: You're fighting it, Isaac. You can't fight it. You have to let me go.
Isaac: But I'll never see you again!
Nicole: Isaac, stop it. There is no other way. You have to do this.

Direct Marker Access Halls #3[]

Chapter 13 telomere10jpg

Nicole: This is it, Isaac. Convergence is almost here. Meet me at the Marker.

Site 12 Marker[]

Bathed in a bright light, Nicole embraces Isaac at the base of the Marker.

Nicole: Thank you Isaac. Now... time to die.
Isaac: What?!

Nicole emits a bright light from her mouth and eyes, holding Isaac in place as shadowy tentacles emerge from behind her and engulf the pair. The fog horn-like sound of Convergence is heard and the scene then shifts to a hallucination within Isaac's mind, consisting of a rocky island floating in a green mist-wreated void with the Red Marker in the distance.

Nicole: Yours is the last body we need to be reborn! The makers must be absorbed.
Isaac: The makers? You mean me? But Stross said we could destroy the Marker!
Nicole: Not if we consume you first!
Isaac: Goddammit, I trusted you! Fuck you! And fuck your Marker!

Dead_Space_2_-_Nicole-Marker_Death

Dead Space 2 - Nicole-Marker Death

During the fight, "Nicole" says the following phrases, in order:

Nicole: You will all be made one. Make us whole.
Nicole: Give up, Isaac.
Nicole: We must be reborn.
Nicole: Isaac, stop. You're hurting me.
Nicole: Give in, Isaac.

If "Nicole" touches Isaac during the fight, the scene will shift back out of his head to show Isaac committing suicide in reality.

Dead Space 3[]

Turn It Off[]

DS3 Isaac Turn It Off

Upon entering Admiral Marjorie Graves' quarters on the CMS Roanoke, Isaac approaches the mural that Graves had built about the Markers and the Alien Machine on Tau Volantis. He enters a catatonic state as he stares at the mural while the screen tints orange and static is heard in the background.

Isaac: Turn it off. Turn it off. Turn it off. Turn it off. Turn it off. Turn it off. Turn it off...

Isaac is then snapped out of this state by John Carver.

Alien Machine Vision[]

DS3 Nexus Alien Machine Vision

After successfully stimulating the dormant nerve clusters that relay Marker signals inside the frozen Nexus specimen, Isaac clutches his head and experiences a brief vision of the Alien Machine.

CMS Brusilov[]

DS3 Carver Brusilov Hallucination 3

During the survivors' search for parts to repair the CMS Crozier, John Carver overhears the sound of his son's voice from a transmission on the CMS Brusilov.

Dylan: Dad? Where are you? Dad, I'm scared. Dad? Dad!

Carver and Isaac go to investigate the ship, with Carver deliberately leaving Isaac in the dark about the specific reason. On the lower deck, they discover a Red Marker surrounded by the corpses of the ship's crew. Carver spots a toy soldier on the ground in front of the Marker.

Dylan: Dad? Where are you?
Carver: Dylan?

Carver moves to pick up the toy soldier against Isaac's warnings not to touch it. The moment that he does, he hears his son again and the Marker begins to glow red.

Dylan: Why did you do it?

Dylan's angry voice prompts Carver to drop the soldier, and he and Isaac are attacked by Necromorphs.

DS3 Carver Birthday Cake Hallucination

On Tau Volantis, John Carver sees the ghost of his wife, Damara, walking off in the distance, cold and bloodied. Deviating from the mission to retrieve the Probe Gun blueprint from Jennifer Santos, Carver and Isaac go to investigate the Archaeology Warehouse where Damara's apparition led them. During an elevator ride, Carver sees a photograph of Damara and his son, Dylan, horribly disfigured with their eyes gouged out and bleeding.

Carver: Huh? What's... No... Dylan? Isaac? Are, are you seeing this?!
Damara: We see what we want to, John.
Carver: What?! What are you, what are you talking about? Isaac? Isaac!

Inside the warehouse, Carver is confronted with party decorations adorned with guilt-ridden messages ("Daddy hates me", "Dead inside", "Like father like son", "Happy Birthday, Dylan", "Waiting for you"). He hears his son whispering to him.

Dylan: Why did you hurt me?
Carver: Dylan? Dylan!

Carver then finds various audio logs detailing the troubled background of his family life, as well as how Carver felt like he had lost his soul and had even considered suicide.

Carver: What the hell is going on here? Isaac! Talk to me!
Damara: Keep going, John. The party hasn't started yet.

After making his way through the warehouse, Carver arrives at a large door leading to Explosives Storage.

Carver: What's behind the door?
Damara: The truth.

Carver enters the large room and sees a giant birthday cake surrounded by toy soldiers. He hears the voice of Damara again as he and Isaac are attacked by a horde of Necromorphs.

Damara: What are you looking for, John? Forgiveness? Because you couldn't be there for us? Because we died? But that wasn't the end, was it? We came back. And now it's time to join the party, John.

When Carver and Isaac get back to the elevator to leave the warehouse, Carver's vision tints orange as Isaac tells him that they have been in the elevator for five minutes and still have not checked the warehouse. A confused Carver then says that they should leave.

Marker Containment[]

DS3 Carver What Are You Afraid Of

Inside the SCAF's Biological Laboratories, Carver experiences another hallucination of Damara whose face is imposed over Isaac's.

Damara: What are you afraid of? He's waiting for you.

Inside, Carver finds an audio log from Damara recounting how she watched as she and Dylan were slowly eviscerated by the Necromorphs. Isaac instead hears the maniacal laughter of a man.

Damara: It wasn't quick, John - what they did to us. Do you know what it's like? To have your own body taken apart while you watch? They opened me like a surgeon, head to toe, and pulled the life out of me piece by piece. Piece by piece. Piece by piece.

DS3 Carver Hallucinations 08

Carver is then transported to a red and hazy world similar to the one where Isaac confronted the Site 12 Marker on Titan Station. This "dementia land" is filled with furniture and items from Carver's family home, and the word "Convergence" is written in Marker symbols all over the floor. Carver catches a glimpse of Damara running ahead of him before she disappears where a Red Marker eventually forms.

Dylan: Dad!
Carver: Dylan!
Dylan: When are you coming home?
Carver: Dylan! Hang on! I'm, I'm coming!
Dylan: Where are you, dad?
Carver: Dylan!!! No! Just hang on!

After leaving the "dementia land" and progressing through the mission, Carver is then transported to it a second time. This time, he hears the voice of Damara.

Damara: You have nothing left, John. No wife. No son. No soul. No will to live. We're waiting for you, John. I saved a place on the couch just for you. Join us... Join us... Join us...

As Carver approaches "Damara", sitting hunched over on a couch next to a Red Marker, she screams at him with her eyes and mouth glowing before Carver returns to the real world. Afterwards, Carver is transported back to the "dementia land" for the third and final time.

Damara: It's time for sacrifice, John. Time to take your place with us.
Carver: No! The Markers took you! You're not Damara!
Damara: Your family is in pieces, John. Your life is all we need to make our family whole again.
Carver: I came here to finish it! And I'm not going home until I've destroyed every fucking one of you!
Damara: Make us whole. Make us whole.
Carver: Fuck you!
Damara: Make us whole!

Carver manages to destroy the Red Marker inside his mind. He is taken back to reality, standing in front of a damaged Marker.

Dead Space 3: Awakened[]

Norton's Ghost[]

DS3 Awakened Norton Ghost

Isaac sees a vision of Robert Norton before the Captain's Necromorph form is revealed.

After waking up on the surface of Tau Volantis following the destruction of the Tau Volantis Moon, Isaac and Carver begin to experience hallucinations from the awakened Brethren Moons. The first is a vision of the deceased Captain Robert Norton standing in the snow.

Isaac: Norton? No... You're dead... Hey... Hey Norton!!!

As Isaac approaches Norton, the vision fades and Norton's true Slasher form is revealed in the place of the ghost, attacking Isaac.

Imaginary Necromorphs and Markers[]

DS3 Awakened Isaac Red Markers Vision

Isaac sees himself surrounded by Red Markers.

Near the end of Chapter 1, when Isaac and Carver finally find a Unitologist Dropship docked in the supply depot, they get ready to fuel it so they can high-tail it off of Tau Volantis. However, they are quickly confronted by imaginary Necromorphs, which are Spitters and Lurkers. While Carver sees only the Necromorphs, Isaac also sees himself surrounded by several Red Markers.

Brethren Moon Visions[]

The Brethren Moons as shown in Issac and Carver hallucinations

A vision of the Brethren Moons.

Isaac and Carver experience visions of the Brethren Moons throughout the entire DLC. At a couple of points, they make Isaac question Carver about whether they should return to Earth or not, making him not trust Carver. While the two of them experience these visions, only Isaac hears the Moons wanting him to lead them to Earth, while Carver hears nothing about it.

Brethren Moons: Lead us, Isaac!

Slasher on the Wall[]

DS3 Awakened Wall Slasher Vision

Isaac sees a previously inactive Slasher attacking him.

Right after the duo gets out of the elevator in the Conning Tower of the CMS Terra Nova. Dead ahead, a dead Slasher is seen nailed to the wall, presumably by the Unitologist Cult. When they approach the Slasher, it immediately grapples on to either Isaac or Carver. A second later, things return to normal and the Slasher is still nailed to the wall.

Cult Leader and Cult Hallucinations[]

DeadSpace3Awakened-OfficialScreen-CultLeader 1

A Cult ritual witnessed as part of a hallucination.

DS3 Awakened Isaac vs Cult Leader Vision

Isaac fights a vision of the Cult Leader.

When Isaac and Carver arrive on the Terra Nova, they are taunted by the Cult throughout the DLC, from witnessing a ritual, to being followed, to getting spoken to and even getting attacked by Scrapers as well as the Cult Leader himself. During these hallucinations, they hear "speeches" from the Brethren Moons talking through the Cult Leader.

Cult Leader/Brethren Moons: "The time of ascension is at hand. Prepare yourselves the way that you may be found." And so we prepare. We purge the sins of our bodies, and we lift up our voices to them that we may be found.

The next speech heard by Isaac and Carver while facing the Cult Leader is different for each of them.

What Isaac hears: The sky will part and we will draw them up, and they will be devoured, and we become one with them. Complete the church, complete this ship and lead us home. Make us whole.

What Carver hears: Even now, we see them. Glowing bright, drawing us near. Soon, we will be there. Soon, we will unite. All worlds will be consumed and become one. We will all be made whole.

Isaac and Carver Fight Each Other[]

DS3 Awakened Isaac vs Carver Vision

Isaac fights a vision of John Carver.

When Isaac and Carver's argument over what they should do with the ShockPoint Drive reaches its boiling point, they fight each other in hallucinations; Isaac fights the impostor of Carver while it is vice-versa for Carver. The "battle" ends with both of them being transported into the "Dementia Land".

Brethren Moons in the "Dementia Land"[]

Throughout the DLC, Isaac and Carver split up into two different hallucinations. Isaac is transported through the neurons into a "Dementia Land" filled with candles, Red Markers, the Cult Leader and the Brethren Moons, while Carver stays in the same room that they were in before and has to fight either Shadow Spitters or Scrapers. Carver is transported into the "Dementia Land" with Isaac only for the very last of these battles.

Brethren Moons: We are all awake now. Awake and hungry. But where is it? Take us home, Isaac. Make us whole.
Brethren Moons: Show us the way to Earth, Isaac.
Brethren Moons: The Earth draws near. Even now we can feel it. Teeming with life. Teeming with Markers. From each world we devour, a new brother will rise and be made whole. Our network will grow and we will live forever.
Brethren Moons: You can kill the prophet, but you can't kill the god! Your chance to warn the Earth has come and gone. We are coming. We are hungry. We are here.
